Home grown Pear Pie

I believe I have mentioned occasionally that we have a few (14) very old, very large, super productive pear trees at our place...I know...Joy, Rapture and all those fun noises...Well the trouble is everyone of them are "cooking pears"...not the kind you could just pick off the tree and nosh on...So what does one do with so many cooking pears??

This was one of 4 box we took to Miracles Happen Ranch a few weeks ago

Well many of them go to a friend for her goats and horses to enjoy....I send some home with my MIL...I actually enjoy watching the squirrels and birds devour them....and many get run over with the lawnmower and/or get composed...My chickens do try very hard to make a dent but alas, we still have hundreds of pears EVERYWHERE....

Well this afternoon I took some advice I was given to "treat them like apples" and made a Easy "pear" Pie....I simply followed the recipe here
http://www.tablespoon.com/recipes/easy-apple-pie-recipe/3/
but substituded pears for apples....

The perfect way to end the evening...
Delish pie from home grown fruit and a glass of milk...

Blessings Kelsie

I've never had pear pie! I need fruit trees, or at least a neighbor that has them and wants to share. Looks good.

We have these pears too. You can pick them and put them in the fridge for a few days and they should soften so you can eat them. I also, cut them up put in a saucepan with some butter, cinnamon and sugar, cook for a bit and them roll them in uncooked biscuits/croissants and bake. YUMMY! We do make the pies as well...

Hi Kelsie, I love pears. Never tried pear pie though. Sounds yummy. You could use some to make pear butter (like apple butter). There are also recipes for poached pear deserts and you could also can them. Perhaps since you have so many of them, if you do the pear butter and canned pears you could sell it at market and make a little extra cash. Fall is a great time of year to sell such goods at the local craft fairs and such. Just a thought.

The pie looks so good!
You have to try pear sauce too. Make it like apple sauce. It freezes well also. Add a little orange peel zest for a good combo.

Have a great weekend.

This looks great! My sister has a tree that's always loaded. We make pear preserves. Talk about yummy! They're wonderful with biscuits or toast for breakfast or anytime.

I love pears and your pear pie looks wonderful, Kelsie! Thanks for the tips on treating them like apples. Sounds logical, doesn't it?

I am delighted that you linked to Potpourri Friday. I appreciate you and hope to see you again this Friday!

We have only 1 pear tree like this and I didn't know what to do with all the pears we had this year. I made some pear chutney. The recipe is on our blog. It's really good with pork or chicken.

Hi Kelsie, pears are my favourite fruit and I would rather have a pear than an apple or peach, etc. but I have never, ever seen or heard of a pear pie. I bet it is delicious, especially with a scoop of vanilla icecream. Thanks for sharing. I have recently found your blog and am now following you, and will visit often. Please stop by my blog and perhaps you would like to follow me also. Have a wonderful day. Hugs, Chris
