Windows for the future...

Lookie what I got...Hubby was nice enough to include these on the truck full of car "stuff" from North Carolina...I might get my greenhouse sooner than I had dared to even dream...At the very least we can use them for cold frames for the fall garden this yr.

More thunderstorms and damages

I am sure many of you remember our $30 Gate Arbor Project...I totally adore how this turned out and it really set the feel for the entire front garden and house...We have had so many lovely comments both on the blog and in real life about this recycled piece of garden "art"

And some of you may remember me mentioning how many pecan branches have come down so far this summer, between the afternoon thunderstorms, that are a way of life here in Florida and the fact the trees are just LOADED with heavy nuts...

The other day we got some very high winds and heavy rains, even for around here...When I heard a crash from the master bedroom...On inspection nothing INSIDE the room was a-miss, but outside the window I saw this...Yup another pecan branch came down...
(side note...check the cheeky male Cardinal peeking thru the window at me taking photos)

There has been for the longest time a rather large branch caught up in the crook of the tree, well it seems that with the wind and rain it grew to heavy and brought down the branches it was caught in...(another side note...Notice how much the grass has come in over the past few months..yay)

Alas it tore the decorative top from my arbor...Hubby assures me he can fix it no problem, thank goodness...

Though I am sad about the arbor not looking so pretty right now, I am just grateful it did not do any damage to the house...

Even my angel statue was spared...

My hanging basket with the almost dead petunia was an unfortunate casualty..

But this is nothing but an inconvenience that is easily fixed....Please send up a little prayer for our friends who are getting more rains and flooding from the TS LEE in Mississippi

Tour Guide Sara

Since this week has been all about lil Sara, I thought it only fitting she should be your guide this week and show you some of her favorite things in the garden...
Gotta love the girls sense of style as she stands in front of the porch...
Notice the white builder sand is still present in this spot...because a certain little 3yr old princess loves to dig right here...She is not going to be so happy when I finally add a paved pathway there.

She loves to help water the potted plants too..Something mummy has been neglecting lately..

And you know she just loves all the butterflies that visit...

Sometimes we will be sitting in the living room and see these giant beauties pass the window and she will go running outside to watch them flit around the flowers...

Actually this is exactly how we ended up outside for today's tour.

Under one of the big old pecan tree's is our "wash tub" with the angel statue..Sara loves to watch the squirrels run up and down the tree and the pretty Cardinals that visit the bird feeder on the other side of the tree...

Because her favorite color is pink, you know she just loves these fluffy full flower heads
(Yes Darla I have forgotten the name already lol)

She also loves the Everlastings because they look like big fluffy paper stars...

But her one of her very favorites is the hibiscus...She loves the huge red blooms and is always sad when she finds them spent and drooping and ask's..."What 'appened 'ere?"

Please stop by and enter my give away...

Where the wild things are...

The other evening I was out taking a walk with lil Sara along the road in front of our property...Going no where special just enjoying the cool breeze that could be a promise or could be a tease that fall is on it's way...As we reached the northern driveway that leads to the family cemetery (yes we really do have one of our own)...I was delighted to see some passion flowers that had not yet closed for the night...These vines grow under the power lines in the old fence line amongst all the bramble so we know they are courtesy of the birds.

So as fast as a 3yr old wearing flip-flops on the wrong feet can, we ran back to the house for my "big camera" (Nikon 990)..Due to the fading light as the sun was trying to sink behind the trees, I switch my menu settings, light meter to "cloudy"..my focus to "Spot" and then hit the macro setting on the quick buttons and turned off the flash....These were the results.

I included a couple of other sweet wild flowers that were growing close by in the ditch..

Can anyone tell me what kinda caterpillar this is?
And please don't say Orange Spiked Punk like someone I will not mention already has lol.

Not sure if I am brave enough to try eating the fruit as they do not seem to change color, just fall from the vine large and green and then rot into the ground...I would however like to transplant some along my back garden fence because they are truly gorgeous flowers.

After the rains...

One of the things that I just do not seem to be able to get past in Florida (and the rest of the South East for that matter) is how it can be cloudy and rain all day but still be hotter than Hades ...Growing up in Albany Western Australia, which has just two temps...Hot - When the sun is out...Cold - When it is raining...Simple weather, for simple living...

I had hoped to join the Chicken Party this week and get something together for the Tea-parties also, but alas it was not meant to be...I did manage to snap a few photos in the garden after the rain finally stopped late this afternoon...

White Vinca - Color Balance Editing

Day Lily Buds

Pink Vinca

Pears

Box of pears ready for tomorrow when we go to visit Boots and help with the worming and vaccination of him and all the other goats...This is going to be a great learning experience for both hubby and I.

More Nuts @ Our Country Home

It has been Crazy Nuts here this past week...What with the Goat coming home for 5 minutes, life with my sweet little 3yr old and the unbearable heat followed by the afternoon thunderstorms, getting out in the flower garden has been some what of a low priority around here...But we have been discussing and planning the fall veggie garden however and even picked up some seed from the seed and feed store this week. Today's selection of garden photos have been snapped at random over the past week and really have no theme.

Wild bee/wasp on a Black Eye Susan

The Mexican Petunia are beginning to bloom

Butterfly bushes have been cut back since they got top heavy and the storms keep toppling them over

Bumble Bee after the afternoon thunderstorm had passed

More pecan limbs on the ground *sad face* At this rate will we have enough pecans for pies this Thanksgiving?

See how loaded this branch was?

And I have a challenge for you...Let's call it the boot challenge...

What is this plant? I know I did not plant it in the boot, but since I recycled some pots and soil it could have come from anyway...I think it is really cute and might even put it into a larger pot...I just wish I knew what it it..

AND FINALLY
We put a For Sale sign in front of the old mobile home...

Now I am off to take a nap while our Princess is, seems the visit to Otter Springs this morning wore me out as much as her...

Afternoon Thunderstorms...

I wanted to get a few photos of the garden today, so right before the afternoon thunderstorms moved in, I grabbed my camera and snapped just a few to share for this weeks garden parties.
The pink boots are holding up to the weather well, only a few flaky bits...I am not sure what it is growing in the left boot, it is some kind of succulent with a little cup part that catches the water when it rains...Sadly the heat this week got to it and it is a little burnt...I will need to move them to a more sheltered spot...in the right boot the thyme is growing back again...yay

I am so in love with my pink Knock-out rose...even after all the pounding from the rain this week the blooms are holding in there...

The sweet potato vines seem to be liking their new home and the basil that I harvested a couple of weeks back has new shoots on it also...my marigolds have been flowering non-stop since March...

Here is the sweet potato vine I snitched for my hanging basket...it is doing well, even had new growth and leaves on it already..

First Black Eye Susan opened this week

The white Wisteria is doing super well...I need to make up my mind which porch post I want to train it up SOON..

The volunteer Vinca are doing great and have filled the bed in front of the porch with a lovely splash of pretty colors.

Alas 2 of my butterfly bushes got blown over during yesterdays storm...Tomorrow morning I will have to trim them back and rebury their roots...

Also thanx to yesterdays storm is this small branch from the pecan tree (there were a few large branches down too)...but it proves we are going to have pecans this yr...I am so excited to have our very own pecans on the sweet potato casserole at Thanksgiving...maybe even our own sweet potatoes too...Actually I am hoping most of the veggies this year will be from our own garden...Are you planting any veggies for your Thanksgiving meal this year?

Before the heat set in....

Yesterday the goal was to get the sweet potato slips in the ground before it got too hot to work in the yard...
We donned our work attire...

Yes, I also have matching pink Croc's and gardening gloves..Except hers are "John Deer" gloves and cost twice as much as mine because gardening gloves for 3yr olds are hard to find.

While I pulled a mountain of weeds, Sara harvested the red Onions...
and nagged me non-stop "I wanna play in poop...I wanna play in poop"

Translation: We need to empty the compost bins into the garden before we plant the slips..

The onions are a little on the small side but I needed to keep nagging McPita child busy and we need the garden space for the sweet potatoes, so up they came.

Though we did get the weeding, harvesting and one compost bin emptied, we still have one more bin to go, THEN I can finally plant the slips...Maybe today before it gets too hot??

Off the subject of gardening...I am still working HARD on my serving heart...Part of which is forcing myself to have more patience to serve Sara by training her...Following thru with punishments and enforcing the family code of conduct....Please continue to pray for me it is going to be a long day.
