Two ladies came to visit...

Yesterday morning they appeared out the back near a hay bale...

Then in the afternoon under the oak tree....

Then again that evening in the front tree line...

This morning they were back? (still here) and spent much of the morning on top of the old barn...

They were hanging around the chicken house when I left for town at 2pm...Have not seen them since I got home...I hope they come back (stay?) tomorrow too.

Farm or Zoo??...You tell me

Sally (the not so sick but still comes inside in a cat carrier at night) Chicken, bless her little chicken heart. We tried to put her back out with the flock yesterday but Bravo is just too rough and kept chasing her down, now she is limping again...I think she prefers the backyard...wonder how she would go living with the goats?

The others are laying pretty well for this time of year, we average 3 to 6 eggs a day and I have found ppl willing to buy said eggs...yay for Egg money...I might save up to buy me some new boots.

I finally tracked down some clippers and a rasping tool thingie, to do the goat hooves (3 stores and a week later) and today should hopefully be the day I will get them done...Also have to treat them for lice..ick...fortunately Goat Lice don't like ppl or anything other than goats and sheep...Does not stop my head from itching every time I think about it..*scratch scratch*

Talking of scratching, I have to bath the stinky dog today...no she is not really that stinky, well no more than a 13yr old dog stinks anyway...I was delighted to find out yesterday that I can attach a garden hose directly to the faucet in the utility room sink so at least Nardia will be getting a warm bath out side and not dirty up my bathroom this time.

Speaking of which, yesterday we got a little side tracked (hence why the dog did not get a bath even though I had the hose attached and ready to go) because we discovered the old fish pond at the old house had sprung a leak and 6 little fishes only had 2 inches of super muddy water to swim in...So we scooped them out and put them in an old paint can (as you do) and then spent the rest of our pre-pickup Sara time cleaning out the old bearded Dragon tank and praying it would hold water...cleaning old garden pond rocks that have been in a now broken plastic kitty litter bucket in the sun for 7yrs and a small water pump...and made them a home on my dinning room side board...I am starting to feel like I live in a zoo.

Talking of Zoos...and this is a little weird, but I did in fact see a monkey on the loose a couple of weeks back...It was sitting on the next neighbors fence (and by neighbor I mean the ppl 1/2mile down the road)..looking at me...I thought I was going crazy and from the tone of her voice when I called my neighbor at work, she thought I had lost my mind too...and being as we have spoken just once before at my mail box to exchange phone numbers this was a rather bizarre phone call to make to her at work...

It went like this.
Me - Sherri?
Her - Yes?
Me - Hi, this is Kelsie from down the road in the blue house...Do you have a pet monkey?
Her - Pardon?
Me - Do you have a pet monkey
Her - Ummm no??
Me (very quickly because I can tell from the tone of her voice she is verging on hanging up on this crazy woman from down the road)...I am out the front of you place and there is a monkey sitting on your fence.
Her - Really??...ummm did you call the sheriff??
Me - No..I wanted to make sure it did not belong to you.
Her - Can you? I am at work and have a class of kids right now.

hehe Can you imagine what was going thru her head at this time??...So turns out that I am not the first one to see this monkey in the area...and he has been sighted again since almost a mile away...or could it be we have a pack (do monkeys move in packs??) loose in the middle of no-where North Florida.

But there is more...Last week the sheriff was in the area door knocking, trying to find out if anyone owns the Llama that is running loose just down the road from me....Good golly grief...I hope the neighbors with the Lion and Tiger rescue farm (1 miles as the crow flies to the east of us) is keep their animals locked up tight.

Oh and of COURSE there is another bobcat in the area, has been sighted multipul times and stolen a few turkeys already this yr...

So much for the quiet country life

Final Answer....

After much thought and pondering I have decided the Nikon Coolpix 5700 is the camera for me...Because though the L120 has more megapixels and much larger zoom capacity...the quality of the image comparisons did not justify the extra $150 it would cost me...
And there was other factors in the 5700's favor...Separate battery and memory card compartments...More logically located dials and buttons ,plus better menu settings that I control and are not pre-programmed questionably named ones.

So today I returned the L120 for a full refund, ordered a second lithium battery for the 5700 and called my good friend whom I am purchasing the 5700 from to tell her the good news.
And snapped a couple of photos of a Eastern Gray Squirrel playing in my pecan tree..

New visitor at Our Country Home

As someone born and raised on the only continent in the world that does not have wild squirrels (other than those that have escaped zoos) I have a special fascination with these cute little tree rodents ever since moving to the USA...In fact during my first visit to the USA almost 35% of the photographs I took home were of the squirrel playing in the front yard of the house in Charlotte NC...I was totally enchanted.

Since moving to FL 7yrs ago I have always felt a special delight each time I see the big Eastern Fox Squirrel (that is what the "locals" tell me they are called...or cat squirrels) ....These guys are huge compared to the small grey and red squirrels I had grown so fond of in NC....The first time one darted across the road in front of me I was sure it was a cat because of it's size....I slammed on my breaks and then watch it dart half way up a tree on the other side of the road, spin around to twitch it's tail and tell me "what for" as only a squirrel can...

Alas we have never been graced with one of these guys on our property...at least not that I had seen...that was until today....Me thinks he might be after some of those pears since that is what brings in the small Eastern Grays (and lots of birds) to the trees just 30ft from our backdoor.

Isn't he/she just gorgeous...and since we have more than enough pears to share...I hope our new visitor decides to stay for awhile so we can enjoy watching his/her squirrel antics.

Otter Springs

Thursday the forecast was for HOT...wow there is a surprise...Hot weather in FL in the summer...but even for us it was going to be H-O-T...The heat index was expected to reach 110 by midday...

So for this reason we packed up the car early and got to Otter Springs by 9.30am...

Be sure and click on images to enlarge
Otter Springs, is a second magnitude natural spring with an average temperature of 73 degrees...This is a photo of the "boil" (where the water comes out of the ground)

Another view of the boil...As you can see the with the lack of rain both here and GA the water table is really low...I think this is why the "boil" is not creating much movement at the water surface.

The low water table however did not slow lil Sara down...she was delighted to be at "the beach"..

Because we were so early we got to enjoy the springs to ourselves for the first hour or so...Later others began to arrive and Sara quickly made friends and borrowed a bucket and spade to make mud castles with. (Note to mummy - Pack bucket and spade next trip)

Sara and Daddy playing in the water...Daddy showed off skipping stones...A skill he kept hidden from me for over 11yrs...I was much impressed...

With Sara and Daddy occupied skipping stones, I decided to take my camera on a little nature walk...Can you see the crane? and there are turtles sunning themselves among the tree roots on the left below the 2 large trees...

Around the corner the stream from the boil leads into the branch that after about a mile joins the Suwannee River...The Rope indicates to boaters they are not allowed any closer to the Spring and swimming areas.

A large crane feather on the waters edge...

Tree roots sticking out of the water along the banks of the branch...

Tree and roots across the water from me...Now if I could just work out how to get a decent close up from here of the turtle sunning himself next to that ugly black log...

THAT AIN'T NO LOG!!!!

I was so busy looking at the turtle and trying to work out how to get a good zoom shot, I did not see the gator until it moved, at which point I freaked out and ran back to the springs to tell David....This is the best and ONLY photo I got because it is actually edited out of the previous photo and was taken BEFORE I realized the 2.5ft Gator was there.
..

SO my advice when swimming at any of our local Springs is...Stay in the "swimming areas"...Keep other ppl between your family and the darker river water...and keep your eyes open...

Other than my gator sighting, it was a fun family outing, we were home by lunch time for hotdogs before the heat was unbearable too.

I am looking forward to returning to Otter Springs on Tuesday with some friends for a Play-date...

Black Swallowtail Butterfly

We awoke this morning to find our butterfly had emerged from the Chrysalis and drying its wings...

I gently moved the entire jar, dill branch and butterfly to the breakfast bar to get a better photo of those beautiful wings..

Lil Sara thought it was very pretty but did not like it when it crawled up her arm...I tried to take a photo of it on her but it was not good..

Just a couple of hours after we got up and it was ready to fly away...I opened the french doors and bid our butterfly fair-de-well...I am sure we will see him again around the garden with all the other butterflies..

It was such a delight to happen upon him as a big fat caterpillar and amazing to find him again the next day tucked away in his Chrysalis...and here we are just 10 short days later and the wonders of nature are revealed before our eyes...

Starting of new things in the garden...

Standing inside my living room I looked out to see one of my lovely parent birds singing a song of love from on top of the bird feeder hook...

The caterpillar I shared last week is now sleeping...I picked the branch of dill it was on and now have it safely in a vase in my kitchen...I so hope Lil Sara will get to see the butterfly that will emerge..

The flowers around and inside the suitcase are blooming...

Oh boy now both parents are outside my window making lots of noise...

This is the view of my faux stag horn and basket from inside my living room...

Peek-a-boo...can you see the baby bird peeking out of the faux greenery...

Oh boy...now the baby is on top of the basket...Parents are very excited now...Fortunately he did return inside to the nest...Not quiet ready to leave this day (Monday)...

However he was making much racket again this morning and by the time we got home from town he was gone...Just the smaller baby bird left in the nest now...I do hope mommy and daddy continue to return and feed this one until it is ready to follow it's larger sibling out in the world.

Spring continues to fill my garden with lovely surprises...

What a fun surprise to find this cute fat (not so little) caterpillar munching away on my dill..Thanks to my MIL's research we found out he will become a Black Swallowtail butterfly.

I am thrilled by the sheer number and different types of butterflies we have flitting around the garden this year...I planted with hopes of attracting them, but was not expecting so many...

I have always admired images of cone flowers and was surprised to have them bloom in my own garden this week courtesy of the cottage mix seeds I scattered back in Feb...Anyone who follows my blog will have figured out by now I am totally loving the number of flowers I have gotten from this one $1.99 box of seeds from Dollar General..Will be buying more of them next year for sure...Not to mention allowing my current flowers to reseed as well..

And just as I was about to give up, the White Wisteria seeds my MIL sent me have finally begun to grow...I was ready to toss the soil back into the bag of potting soil to be reused else where...Not any more...

And an update on my baby wrens...They are now a week old and I finally was able to get a non-blurred photo of them...You look at them like this and it is hard to believe they will be ready to fly in just one more week...Mom and dad work around the clock during daylight hours bringing them lots of tasty morsels...When you are on the porch you can hear them calling for more food non-stop also...I think my cockatiels are enjoying having some bird company on the porch.

Life continues in the garden....

Though the Gladioli are finished for the year there are still plenty going on in this 8x8 garden bed ...The 2 small rose bushes planted in here are currently hidden by the "cottage mix" flowers I sprinkled around them at the beginning of spring...Now this lovely mix is showing all its lovely gems and if the box is to be believed will continue to do so all summer long...I sure do hope so...

A bee enjoying the Corn Flowers..

I love these pretties...From what I can tell these are "Gloriosa Daisies" but I could be wrong..Anyone know for sure?

And of course the king of summer flowers, the sunflower, courtesy of the bird feed that used to hang over this spot :)

And lastly a very bad photo of the best part of a spring time garden...Wren Chicks...these babies are inside a basket containing my faux Stag-horn plant that hangs on the front porch...
I could not get a better photo because momma and poppa have done a great job of making sure the nest is down deep inside the basket under the faux plant and I did not want to disturb them anymore than I already had...

I also discovered another birds nest tucked away in the old power meter box that has had the meter removed that is located over near the old place...Not sure if it has chicks yet because I am too short to see down into where they tucked the nest lol
