First pear blossoms for 2012

Wow can you believe it is that time of year here again already....I *heart* pear blossoms...Shame they smell so bad or I could have branches of them in vases all over my house.

Surprises in the winter garden...

At the end of a hot dry summer here in Florida, the flowers on the clearance rack at Walmart where looking less than appealing...but as a complete sucker for Gerber Daisies and for a bargin...How could I not snap up the 3 pots of dried up wilted leaves marked Gerber for just a $1.50??

We did have a cold snap once a couple of weeks ago and then it warmed up again..Add a little rain, and SURPRISE...My discount gerbers have decided it is time to bloom...

The colors are quiet different to the bright and rich color Gerber you usually see...I am excited to see what the 3rd color will be...it has budded but not bloomed yet.

The make shift Greenhouse is doing it's job too...The Banana plant has grown some new leaves...We will need to make half the Greenhouse 2 windows high soon to accommodate this growth.

Look at the lovely peppers that are hidden inside...

Time for a harvest this week I think...

Pretty Kitty AKA Piglet, is also enjoying the winter sunshine in the garden.

Getting to know you...

Today I have a little bit of a random assortment of images to share with you...As I have mentioned in a previous post I am trying out a Nikon 5700 camera to see if I want to buy it...Well as with everything around here, it got interrupted and delayed a little.

BUT, Yesterday I did manage to find a couple of moments to take it out into the front garden...Alas all the squirrels and birds scattered and I did not have time to await their return...So instead...

I took a new photo of my little Cherub statue...
Don't blink, he might cry
(little Dr Who reference for those of you are confused right now *grin*)

Change of focus, Cherub in the background and a lovely new Lavender stem in the front.

Then in the afternoon Lil Sara, her dolly Wil and myself took a little stroll to see what we could find...

Look we found Daddy working on his cars...So Lil Sara and Wil helped him out some.

Then Sara checked all the tires where good and tight....

The cows next door were very curious to see what was up...Who would have thought dust from them running to the fence could look so pretty in the afternoon sun light...

Talking of fence...Only our southern property line is fenced...We dream of the day when the rest is too and we can bring in more animals and really get serious about raising our own food.

The gate in the south fence...It used to get used a lot but alas our neighbor moved away and now his house stands empty and his fields are rented out.

I hope today to have more quiet time to work with the camera so I can try and make a decision about buying it or not...We have a hawk that hunts in the Sorghum field behind the house each day that I am dying to get some photos of.

Fall Veggie Garden

Finally found the time to get some of the fall veggies seedlings planted this week.

Farmer Brown aka Hubby, planted 7 more rows of corn seed...The soil (who am I kidding I live in FL it is sand) was good and soaked thru from all the rain earlier this week.

Bok Choy ( Chinese Cabbage)

I mixed in some cow compost and then covered with used hay from the goat pen...I hope this will do well to build up the "soil" so we can avoid having to add any man-made chemicals...

We still have plenty more to plant....Hope the nice weather holds.

You didn't really think I could do a post without a goat update did you?

As you can see they are settling in well and lil Sara is even kind enough to share her slide with them....

I do also want to explain why I have not been visiting all my favorite blogs much lately...Being out in the country we are on satilite internet...and this comes with limited daily bandwidth usage...With Big Daughter home, not only does that put a 3rd person on the internet, but also she needs it to fill out job applications...So as any mummy would do, I have scaled by my own usage to allow for the extra draw on our bandwidth...I miss seeing what is going on out there in blog land and all my fellow blogging friends.

Fall Garden

What a pleasant surprise these marigolds are blooming again...Planted back in spring they have survives the summer heat and a couple of transplantings.

My Mexican Petunias have been giving a wonderful display too...Each morning I am delighted to find even more blooms than the ones dropped the evening before
.
One year this month since I started this garden bed...I think it is filling our nicely...May even need to move a few bushes to new locations.

Also under the pecan tree is starting to give the appearance of an established bed...I hope next year the lilies I transplanted from in the woods will actually bloom (They came from the foot print of house #2 on the property circa-1940/50's)

And the ever lovely and faithful daisy bush...No cottage garden should be without a least a couple ( I have 5 lol )

More thunderstorms and damages

I am sure many of you remember our $30 Gate Arbor Project...I totally adore how this turned out and it really set the feel for the entire front garden and house...We have had so many lovely comments both on the blog and in real life about this recycled piece of garden "art"

And some of you may remember me mentioning how many pecan branches have come down so far this summer, between the afternoon thunderstorms, that are a way of life here in Florida and the fact the trees are just LOADED with heavy nuts...

The other day we got some very high winds and heavy rains, even for around here...When I heard a crash from the master bedroom...On inspection nothing INSIDE the room was a-miss, but outside the window I saw this...Yup another pecan branch came down...
(side note...check the cheeky male Cardinal peeking thru the window at me taking photos)

There has been for the longest time a rather large branch caught up in the crook of the tree, well it seems that with the wind and rain it grew to heavy and brought down the branches it was caught in...(another side note...Notice how much the grass has come in over the past few months..yay)

Alas it tore the decorative top from my arbor...Hubby assures me he can fix it no problem, thank goodness...

Though I am sad about the arbor not looking so pretty right now, I am just grateful it did not do any damage to the house...

Even my angel statue was spared...

My hanging basket with the almost dead petunia was an unfortunate casualty..

But this is nothing but an inconvenience that is easily fixed....Please send up a little prayer for our friends who are getting more rains and flooding from the TS LEE in Mississippi

Tour Guide Sara

Since this week has been all about lil Sara, I thought it only fitting she should be your guide this week and show you some of her favorite things in the garden...
Gotta love the girls sense of style as she stands in front of the porch...
Notice the white builder sand is still present in this spot...because a certain little 3yr old princess loves to dig right here...She is not going to be so happy when I finally add a paved pathway there.

She loves to help water the potted plants too..Something mummy has been neglecting lately..

And you know she just loves all the butterflies that visit...

Sometimes we will be sitting in the living room and see these giant beauties pass the window and she will go running outside to watch them flit around the flowers...

Actually this is exactly how we ended up outside for today's tour.

Under one of the big old pecan tree's is our "wash tub" with the angel statue..Sara loves to watch the squirrels run up and down the tree and the pretty Cardinals that visit the bird feeder on the other side of the tree...

Because her favorite color is pink, you know she just loves these fluffy full flower heads
(Yes Darla I have forgotten the name already lol)

She also loves the Everlastings because they look like big fluffy paper stars...

But her one of her very favorites is the hibiscus...She loves the huge red blooms and is always sad when she finds them spent and drooping and ask's..."What 'appened 'ere?"

Please stop by and enter my give away...

Everlasting Flower -

Last week I posted a photo of the everlasting flower bud (or at least the flower closed for the day)...and got lots of comments and inquires about it...So today I since I finally manage to catch it open with my camera handy, I thought I would share some more photos and TRY addressing some of the questions..

Back in the spring I grabbed a packet of seeds called *fill in the blank* (Everlastings) I planted them in trays inside like all my other seeds...eventually transplanting them into the garden about March or April I guess...then forgot about them...Until last week.

Well I thought and even told a few ppl they were called Helichrysum...but now I am not so sure...I think they might have been the Asters...Unfortunately all my carefully places name tags become
toys for a certain little princess, making it a fun guessing game to what I actually planted.

This is what Flowerinfo.org had to say about the Everlastings
http://flowerinfo.org/everlasting-flowers

I do know when I see the seeds in the store this coming season I will be sure and grab a bunch of packets.

While Out Watering...

I snapped a few photos with my small camera while
watering Sunday night...
Almost done...Pink Knock-out Rose..

I just love my Vincas...So perfectly simple in design but so stunning en-mass and close-up

And the variety of colors is so fun...

Lock on my suitcase planter and some marigold buds.

Partly open "Everlastings"...I never seem to have my camera with me when they are fully open.

The Black-eye Susan still displaying strong...

A Zinna is such a delight with it's 2 "flowers" in one...

And it would not be watering time in the garden without a little mud monsters help.

Blessings Kelsie
